Conversation AI and Chatbots – Your New Friendly Neighbours

If your website or application still has a section that mentions, “please contact during office hours” or “we are away at the moment” or “our executive is busy, please wait”. Believe it or not, you are outdated. And there is only one place for obsolete things: Archives!

Chatbots technology bought a revolutionary wave, and every business accepted chatbots technology for those OOO (Out-of-office) moments. But it did not stop there.

Changing faces of chatbots

Initially, chatbots were fun to tinker around with. A machine answering our questions was an exciting thing for many of us. But within a short time, it took off due to its potential in business.

From answering trivial questions to resolving queries, it has come to booking appointments, travel tickets, Banking assistance, and many such serious use cases.

In 2021, businesses that adopted chatbots found out that they resolved a whopping 80% of queries by themselves, which saved 30% of the operational cost. This is a perfect example of business efficiency using technology.

The chatbots have evolved into more conversational elements, with better EQ (Emotional Quotient) and IQ (Intelligence Quotient). There are mainly 3 different types of chatbots based on their level of intelligence.

  1. Rule-Based chatbots –Looking up order status or browsing through a product catalog.
  2. Contextual or intellectual chatbots- Auto-filled information, such as location and preference, while ordering pizza.
  3. Fully Automated AI-powered chatbots – Alexa

Conversational AI is the main support system behind AI-powered chatbots. This technology combines natural language processing (NLP) with traditional software like chatbots, voice assistants, or an interactive voice recognition system. It adds a human-like touch to the business queries and their responses.

The concern for a few businesses here is the cost of these intelligent chatbots; it will increase as you go for a more intelligent bot. But not every business needs the most sophisticated bot.

 Smart Chatbots

Cost vs. bot’s intelligence

To save some bucks, choose the bot that justifies your business needs. For instance, the rule-based bot is perfect if you have a set of simple tasks with a fixed functional flow. The best examples of these systems are booking movie tickets, booking dentist appointments, capturing user details, choosing a slot, and confirming the booking.

A little complex case such as banking assistance is the perfect scenario for opting for intellectual chatbots. Imagine this sequence of banking activities:

Your user wants to pay their credit bills, but the user asked for balance details during the process. The application has to show the balance first and then resume the bill payment procedure, precisely from where it was diverted. This context switching ability provides an incredible user experience and feels like a human-interactive transaction.

This scenario brings us to the 3rd type of bot that is AI-enabled. Alexa and Google assistant are well-known examples of this.

This kind of bot can handle a wide range of queries and, with proper planning, can single-handedly take most of your customer support workload.

Which is the perfect chatbot?

There is no perfect chatbot. While intellectual and AI chatbots need lots of training data to be trained, Rule-based chatbots may not fit in specific business logic. The balance is what you will have to seek. MVP methodology can help here. You can design your chatbots with simple functionality, float them in the market, gather user feedback, and keep improving. Hence, early deployment is the key.

To summarize, we follow the process as under

  • Understand your use case.
  • Plan your chatbot,
  • Design and deploy as early as possible

1.5 billion people are using chatbots daily. This is something you don’t want to ignore for your good.
